Oh this is one of the toughest parts of the job search / career change.
Let's discuss mastering "Tell me about yourself". Yikes! Where do you start? Unless you’ve carefully structured and practiced a good answer to this one, there’s a high danger of rambling on, being too verbose, or not really giving the interviewer what they were looking for in the first place. Plus, since this is the first question, it can really set the tone for the rest of your interview! Wait! Don't freak out and get nervous, let’s make sure that you start off confidently.
The goal is to craft an answer that’s not only clear and concise, but also makes the interviewer’s ears perk up as you show off all your amazing traits and background. Here is a very simple set of steps to follow when answering this interview question:
1. Who You Are
A one sentence introduction to who you are professionally, showing off your strengths and your personality as well.
2. Expertise Highlights
Don’t assume the interviewer has carefully read your resume. Briefly highlight 2-4 points that make you stand out.
3. Why You’re Here
End by telling them that you want the position, and why.
Simple, right?! Anyone can talk through those three points.
